Cyber safety for kids involves teaching them how to navigate the online world safely and responsibly. This includes understanding potential risks like cyberbullying, online predators, and inappropriate content, and learning how to protect personal information, create strong passwords, and recognize and avoid scams. Open communication with a trusted adult is crucial for addressing any concerns or uncomfortable situations encountered online

For Parents:
  • Open communication:
    Create a safe space for kids to talk about their online experiences and concerns. 
     
  • Parental controls:
    Utilize parental control features on devices and software to restrict access to inappropriate content, according to GCFGlobal. 
     
  • Stay involved:
    Be aware of the apps and websites your children are using and engage in discussions about their online activities. 
     
  • Monitor online activity:
    Regularly check your child’s online activity, including browsing history and social media interactions. 
     
  • Teach responsible online behavior:
    Model good online behavior, emphasizing respect, empathy, and responsible sharing of information, according to Be Internet Awesome. 
     
  • Address cyberbullying:
    Teach kids how to recognize and report cyberbullying, and how to respond appropriately if they are targeted.

For Kids:
  • Protecting personal information:
    Never share personal details like address, phone number, school name, or passwords with anyone online, except with a parent or trusted adult. 
    Avoiding strangers:
    Be cautious of online interactions with strangers and never agree to meet in person without parental consent
    Recognizing cyberbullying:
    If targeted by cyberbullying, report it to a trusted adult and avoid responding to the bully
     
    Clickbait and scams:
    Be wary of suspicious links, pop-ups, or offers that seem too good to be true, and avoid clicking on them.
     
    Downloading safely:
    Don’t download anything without permission from a parent or guardian. 
     
    Privacy settings:
    Always check and adjust privacy settings on apps and social media accounts to control who can see your information
    When in doubt, talk it out:
    If you encounter anything questionable or uncomfortable online, talk to a trusted adult immediately
